The view of Pont d’Arcole and Ile de la Cite from the bateaux mouches.
This evening scene has been on my drawing/painting surface since my 2016 trip to Paris last summer. I just never really knew how to approach it, with the heavily-silhouetted bridge taking up too much of the composition. That is, however, until I had a few panorama-sized sheets of Arches left over from larger paintings, and the shape inspired me to find a way to work it all into a painting. I’ve continued to explore the late-day darkness and shadows with this watercolor and found plenty of ways to introduce ambiguity within the details and amplify the late-day light found in summer in Paris.
