Travelogue: Belle-Ile-en-Mer, France

From the past week’s painting workshop in the medieval walled fortress along the Brittany coast.

Great company, a warm, caring and creative leader in Denis Ponsot, and amazing vistas anywhere you looked—this was my time on Belle-Ile-en-Mer. We stayed at the Citadelle Vauban, in itself a unique destination with a chance to stay in a medieval fortress. This plein-air painting, done early Sunday, is from one of the numerous overlooks on the property. To paint I would opt to sit on the stone wall or prop my Arches block on the parapet and get a clear view of the Atlantic Ocean and the horizon at Quiberon. The weather cooperated splendidly with exciting skies and gorgeous light all day long. I’ll be posting more later on, with studio-based paintings to follow.
