Yesterday at Coney Island

The abstract of a seascape

Our walk this afternoon had me regretting that I didn’t bringing along my paints. I knew it when we left…it would have been a chance for some inspirational plein air painting. So back in the studio today this was the second best, working from a photo.

The sky was dark, bands of rain falling along the horizon, but the clouds eventually parted and made lovely holes of cobalt and turquoise. No shadows, soft tones, and a largely-deserted beach.

Working large, big brushes, lots of water, minimal brushstrokes. I want to look back at this painting a year from now and wonder what was I thinking? But for now, I love the mess and splatters and getting it done quickly. Next time I’ll bring the paints.

  1. Love the looseness of this painting.
