Snow School for Girls

We know how to have fun

When this group of girls passed me in the park during the first snowstorm of the season, I snapped several shots with my Canon and tucked the image away for future use. I love how the two groups of girls—the two fashionistas and the five ready-to-get-messy types—contrast each other with equally fun styling and attitude.

It took some courage for me to tackle this painting with seven figures, but I found that by drawing the relationships between the girls, and paying close attention to the negative spaces around them, that I could make an interesting composition. The arc of the plowed roadway holds it all together. Throw in some sharp lighting and shadows, and I had plenty to keep me entertained during this past week of cold and storms.

  1. This is such a neat contemporary watercolor. I think that sign put the real finish to this scene. So full of wonderful light.
